APA 50 Show - September 2006

Focus Lighting & Productions were commissioned to provide lighting, sound, set, staging and video for The APA 50 Show which showcases the top 50 television adverts of the year. The event was held at The Victoria & Albert Museum in September 2006 and was attended by over 600 invited industry guests with a drinks reception preceding a video screening of the winning adverts. Installation time was a major hurdle on this event as the museum closed at 5.45pm and the first guests arrived at 7pm, so all the technical elements had to be installed in this small window of time.

Lighting - theatrical lighting was provided to enhance the reception space and the sponsor's logos were projected over the architecture of the building. Colour changing lighting was provided in The Lecture Theatre where the video screening took place to enhance the domed ceiling.

Sound - A PA system was installed in the reception space for background music and entertainment and a further system was installed in the garden area for Norman Jay to perform. A sound system was also provided in The Lecture Theatre for the video content.

Set & Staging - Focus designed a 38' wide set with a front projection screen aperture of 34' x 9' thus providing the largest projection surface possible within the space. We built a small podium for the introductory speeches which were held from an internally lit acrylic lectern. A stage was built in the garden for Norman Jay.

Video - Three large projectors were provided and lined up to give the impression of one large widescreen image with the central projector showing the adverts and the two side projectors showing the credits related to each clip. The background graphics for the credits were pre-produced and all video clips and credits were entered into a "Watchout" system allowing us to play the whole show with all the clips synchronized. There was a rehearsal day off site to ensure that all the information was correctly inserted into the "Watchout" system.

Logistics - Great care was taken to protect the fabric of the building and the museum exhibits. A method statement and risk assessment were provided prior to the show. All crew received a detailed briefing in advance to ensure that the installation was completed on time and detailed production and show schedules were provided.

Feedback - "I just wanted to say a HUGE thank you to you and all your crew for laying on yet again another fabulous show.
I received so many e-mails from my guests saying it was the BEST show of the year which is most encouraging." Nicki Masterson, APA.
